About Mount Karisimbi
Mount Karisimbi, found along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo reaches an elevation of 4,507 meters. The name ‘Karisimbi’ derives from the Kinyarwanda term ‘kora’ meaning ‘to weave’ referring to its snow covered slopes that exhibit an appearance. Although classified as a volcano this majestic mountain possesses volcanic soil that sustains flourishing montane ecosystems. The higher altitudes of Karisimbi provide a nurturing habitat for a range of plant and animal species including primates such, as Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys. Hiking Mount Karisimbi requires a level of fitness especially considering the demanding nature of the trek. It is highly beneficial to have hiking experience at higher altitudes. It’s important to be aware of altitude sickness and its symptoms and to acclimatize properly.
To climb Mount Karisimbi it is mandatory to obtain a hiking permit from the Rwanda Development Board. Due to availability it is recommended to book the permit in advance.
When begining on this hike hikers must be accompanied by a guide provided by the Rwanda Development Board. These guides are. Familiar with the terrain offering support throughout the tour. Additionally porters can be hired to assist with carrying camping equipment and supplies.
Mount Karisimbi Costs
As of the information 2021) obtaining a permit for hiking Mount Karisimbi costs 400 USD. This fee covers guide services as rangers assistance. If hiring porters there will be charges amounting to 20 USD per day per porter.
It’s important to note that accommodation expenses, meals and transportation to and from Volcanoes National Park are not included in the permit fee. There are accommodation options in Kigali or, near the park catering to different travel preferences ranging from budget friendly choices to luxurious ones.
The optimal time to hike Mount Karisimbi is, during the season, which spans from June to September and December to February. During these months the trails are less muddy and the overall hiking conditions are more enjoyable.
However it’s worth noting that the rainy season from March to May and October to November also has its allure. The landscape is greener and more vibrant. You can expect crowds on the trails creating a more intimate experience. Just be prepared for rainfall and slippery paths during this period.
Mt. Karisimbi Hiking Package
Day 1; Arrival in Kigali
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, a knowledgeable tour guide will be there to greet you and assist with your transfer to your hotel. Take some time to relax recuperate from your tour and get ready for the climb.
Day 2; Transfer to Volcanoes National Park – Hike to Karisimbi Camp
After an early morning meal your guide will transport you to Volcanoes National Park. At the park headquarters you’ll attend a briefing where essential information, about the trek will be shared along with an opportunity to meet your ranger guides.
The hike will commence from the park boundaries going uphill through fields and entering the Hagenia woodland before reaching altitude vegetation zones. It’s a trek. You’ll be rewarded with captivating views and the chance to spot various bird species, primates and even buffalo or elephants.
On the day of hiking you’ll reach Karisimbi Camp (located at an altitude of 3,800m). This camp is nestled between Karisimbi and Bisoke volcanoes. You’ll set up camp here for the night.
Day three is summit day! You’ll start early in the morning to make your way, towards Mount Karisimbis summit. Once you reach the top prepare to be amazed, by views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Take your time to soak in these vistas before beginning your descent.
When you return to the base camp your driver will be waiting to transport you to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule you can. Choose to spend the night in Kigali or head to the airport for departure.
