Mt Kenya National Park

Mt. Kenya National Park is situated to the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley, approximately 175 kilometers North-East of the capital Nairobi.  The ecosystem is found in Central plus the Eastern provinces of this country.  At 5,199 meters Mt Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa. This mountain is a significant water source in Kenya. It provides water to approximately 50% of the total population of Kenya and produces 70% of the hydroelectric power in the country.

Mount Kenya is inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.  It is regarded among the most fascinating landscapes in the whole of Eastern Africa with its jagged glacier-clad peaks, Afro-alpine moorlands as well as a variety of forests that demonstrate its exceptional ecological processes.

HOW TO REACH Mt. KENYA NATIONAL PARK

The park can be reached by either road or air transport. By Road it is 175 kilometers from the capital Nairobi, using the Nanyuki-Isiolo road through the Sirimon Track or using Nyeri-Nanyuki road found close to Naro Moru. This park is as well reachable through Chogoria via the Embu -Meru road, approximately 150 kilometers north of the capital Nairobi.

PARK GATES AROUND Mt. KENYA NATIONAL PARK

There are a couple of gates into Mt. Kenya National Park and these include: The Narumoru Gate, Kihari Gate, Mawingu Gate, Sirimon Gate, Kamweti Gate and Chogoria Gate. At the park entrance each guest will be required to pay a park entrance fee in cash.

The park covers a total area of 2800 sq.km, and it is found on the Eastern side of the Rift Valley. Mountain Kenya is found approximately 140km North North-East of the capital city of Kenya Nairobi and its Northern borders the Equator crossing

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS WITHIN THE PARK

The Pristine wilderness, beautiful glacier peaks, lakes, forest, tarns, mineral springs, geological variety, endangered species of animals, exceptional montane plus alpine vegetation, game  adapted to high altitude as well as plant species endemic to this area.

WILDLIFE IN Mt. KENYA NATIONAL PARK

Within the park you will see animals such as Elephants, Elands, tree hyrax, bushbucks, white tailed mongoose, water buck, suni, mole rat plus the black fronted duiker. Among the uncommon animals here are: rhinos, leopards, giant forest hogs plus bongo.

In addition, this national park has more than 130 species of birds on record.

There are a number of activities that can be enjoyed within the park. Among these are: Game drives, Camping, Cave Exploration and Mountain Climbing
