Mirima Kibale Lodge

Luxury
★★★★★ 5 Star

Mirima Kibale Lodge occupies a rare and beautiful position between two crater lakes in the western Uganda highlands near Fort Portal, offering guests a combination of serene lake scenery, access to chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, and the kind of deeply considered luxury that transforms an accommodation stay into something genuinely memorable. The lodge is set just outside the national park boundary, and the crater lake landscape that surrounds it, formed by ancient volcanic activity, gives the property a geological drama that few lodges in Uganda can match.

The ten private cottages are the defining accommodation feature. Each is spacious, elegantly furnished, and positioned to take full advantage of the crater lake views. The design language throughout the lodge draws on natural materials including local timber, stone, and woven fabrics, combined with large timber-framed windows that bring the landscape inside. Cosy indoor fireplaces provide warmth during the cooler evenings at this altitude, and the open plan interiors feel generous and unhurried. Each cottage offers complete privacy from its neighbours, creating a sense of having the lodge entirely to oneself even when the property is fully occupied.

The main lodge building contains a restaurant and bar designed for relaxed communal dining and socializing. The kitchen produces menus that balance locally sourced Ugandan produce with international culinary influences, and the dining experience is enhanced by views across the crater lakes that change mood and colour throughout the day. Morning breakfasts taken as the mist rises off the lake surface, and evening dinners as the last light fades over the water, create particularly memorable atmospheres.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, where the park's habituated communities offer some of the best primate viewing on the continent, is the primary activity for Mirima guests. The park is home to more than 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 primate species, making it the world's most chimpanzee-dense forest. The lodge's proximity also makes it an ideal base for crater lake walks, cultural visits to local communities, and birdwatching in one of Uganda's most species-rich areas. For guests travelling between Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mirima also provides a strategically excellent position midway between these two major destinations.
