Kibale Forest
Kibale Lodge is the newest and most ambitious addition to the Volcanoes Safaris portfolio in Uganda, opened in 2024 and built on a dramatic ridge above the rolling hills and farmlands west of Fort Portal. It represents an exceptional level of investment in both the physical property and the conservation mission that underpins it, and from the moment of arrival the quality and ambition of the project is immediately apparent. The lodge sits on 150 acres of land with panoramic views stretching west to the Rwenzori Mountains and south across the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kazinga Channel, a perspective that takes in an extraordinary range of Uganda's landscapes from a single vantage point.
The accommodation consists of eight handcrafted luxury bandas, four deluxe and four standard, each built by an in-house team of African artisans from the countries of the Great Lakes region. The lead builder, Cyprien Serugero, was responsible for the construction of the Virunga Lodge in Rwanda twenty years earlier, and the level of craftsmanship visible throughout the property reflects that pedigree. Bandas feature private terraces overlooking either the Rwenzori Mountains or the Fort Portal hills, en-suite bathrooms with double vanities and indoor and outdoor showers, cosy fireplaces for cool mornings and evenings, wooden floors, four-poster beds draped with sheer mosquito nets, and locally crafted décor including Kuba cloth textiles and natural stone. A personal butler service is included for all guests throughout their stay.
The main lodge building contains a restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining options, a bar, and communal lounge areas. Locally inspired menus include dishes such as Filinda, a traditional Ugandan delicacy typically served at marriage ceremonies, alongside broader international offerings. The Kibale Forest Spa provides two double massage rooms, a sauna, and a swimming pool, with all massages complimentary for guests during their stay.
Kibale Lodge is situated 30 minutes by road from Kibale Forest National Park, where chimpanzee trekking and habituation experiences represent the core activity. In partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, the lodge organises community outreach programmes through the Roots and Shoots initiative and supports the Rwenzori Sculpture Foundation. A tree nursery and reforestation project on the property demonstrates the lodge's practical commitment to environmental conservation alongside its partnership with the Albertine Apes Alliance.
For guests seeking to combine chimpanzee tracking in Kibale with golden monkey tracking at Kyambura Gorge Lodge and gorilla trekking in Bwindi, Kibale Lodge forms the northern anchor of Volcanoes Safaris' "Primates of the Great Rift Valley" itinerary, one of the most highly regarded primate safari experiences available anywhere in Africa.
