Safari Details

Mountain gorilla trekking takes place in only three African countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with permits required for all visits.

Uganda charges USD 800 per gorilla permit while Rwanda charges USD 1,500, with both countries enforcing strict daily visitor limits of eight people per habituated gorilla family.

Permits for peak season months of July and August in 2026 are already fully reserved in popular sectors, requiring bookings 18 to 24 months in advance for future travel.

Physical fitness requirements include the ability to hike 2 to 6 hours through steep, muddy terrain at elevations between 2,400 and 4,000 meters.

Conservation revenue from gorilla tourism funds over 80% of mountain gorilla protection programs and supports local community development initiatives.

Mountain gorillas have been reclassified from Critically Endangered to Endangered status, with populations recovering from 250 individuals in the 1980s to over 1,000 today.

Trekking regulations prohibit visitors with contagious illnesses, require maintaining 7-meter distances from gorillas, and limit viewing time to one hour per encounter.

Booking through licensed tour operators is the standard process, as individual travelers rarely secure permits during high-demand periods without professional assistance.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Africa refers to guided hiking expeditions to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitats across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Visitors must purchase government-issued permits costing between USD 800 and USD 1,500 per person, which allow one hour of observation time with a habituated gorilla family. The activity requires moderate to high physical fitness for hiking 2 to 6 hours through mountainous rainforest terrain, with strict conservation regulations protecting both gorillas and their habitat. Only 8 visitors per gorilla family per day are permitted, making advance booking necessary, particularly for travel during June through September and December through February.

Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place in Africa?

Mountain gorilla trekking occurs exclusively in three African countries that share the Virunga Massif mountain range and surrounding protected forests. Uganda offers trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda provides access through Volcanoes National Park, and the Democratic Republic of Congo operates trekking in Virunga National Park. These locations represent the entire global range of mountain gorillas, with no populations existing outside this region.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda contains over 20 habituated gorilla families distributed across four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector operates independently with separate permit allocations, providing more flexibility for booking compared to single-park systems. The park covers 331 square kilometers of montane and lowland forest at elevations between 1,160 and 2,607 meters.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda shares borders with Rwanda and Congo, covering 33.7 square kilometers of the Virunga Mountains. The park typically hosts one habituated gorilla family that occasionally crosses international borders, requiring coordination with neighboring parks. Mgahinga serves as an alternative when Bwindi permits are unavailable, though family movements can affect trekking reliability.

Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda encompasses 160 square kilometers of bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, hosting 12 habituated gorilla families. The park sits at elevations between 2,400 and 4,507 meters across five volcanic peaks. Shorter driving distances from Kigali compared to Uganda’s parks make Rwanda accessible for travelers with limited time, though permit costs are higher.

Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo offers the lowest permit prices but faces periodic closures due to security conditions. The park contains habituated families in the southern sector near Bukima and Jomba. Travelers considering Congo must verify current security status and access conditions before booking, as situations change with limited notice.

Comparing Uganda and Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Uganda offers lower permit costs at USD 800 compared to Rwanda’s USD 1,500, creating savings of USD 700 per person. For groups or families, this difference becomes substantial when multiplied across multiple permits. Budget-conscious travelers typically choose Uganda for cost reasons alone.

Uganda provides greater permit availability through Bwindi’s four sectors with over 20 habituated gorilla families, compared to Rwanda’s single park with 12 families. This distribution creates more booking options and flexibility for travelers with specific date requirements. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park serves as an additional Uganda option when Bwindi is fully booked.

Rwanda offers shorter travel times from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, requiring approximately 2 to 3 hours of driving compared to 8 to 10 hours from Kampala to Bwindi. This accessibility makes Rwanda suitable for travelers with limited time or those preferring to minimize road travel. Direct international flights from London Gatwick to Entebbe launched in May 2025 have improved Uganda’s accessibility for UK-based travelers.

Terrain difficulty varies within countries rather than between them, as gorilla locations on trekking day determine hike intensity. Both countries feature steep, muddy trails through dense vegetation at similar elevations. Claims that one country offers easier trekking are misleading, as family assignments and weather conditions create more variation than national boundaries.

Accommodation standards and variety are comparable in both countries, with options ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury lodges. Rwanda’s tourism infrastructure near Volcanoes National Park is concentrated in a smaller area, while Uganda’s Bwindi sectors spread accommodation across wider geography. Both destinations provide quality lodging appropriate for various budgets.

Choose Uganda if permit costs are a primary concern, if booking flexibility is important, or if combining gorilla trekking with other Uganda attractions like Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Choose Rwanda if minimizing travel time is essential, if budget allows for higher permit costs, or if combining with Rwanda-specific attractions like Nyungwe Forest or Akagera National Park.
