Ishasha Jungle Lodge

Mid-range
★★★★★ 5 Star

Ishasha Jungle Lodge is positioned in one of Queen Elizabeth National Park's most remote and rewarding sections, the southern Ishasha sector where the park's famous tree-climbing lions spend their days resting in the branches of large fig trees along the Ntungwe River. The lodge sits alongside this river itself, and the combination of the riverine forest, the open savannah plains beyond, and the particular quality of the Ishasha landscape, less visited and more wild-feeling than the northern park areas, gives the property a character that is distinctively its own.

The accommodation consists of independent cottages constructed with an aesthetic that balances comfort with a genuine connection to the surrounding bush. Half stone, half canvas walls, grass-thatched roofs, and raised wooden decks overlooking the Ntungwe River create a building style that feels authentically integrated with the environment rather than imposed upon it. Each cottage provides en-suite bathroom facilities, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, and the kind of open, airy construction that keeps temperatures pleasant in this part of the park. The Ntungwe River view from the cottage decks is one of the most scenic features of the lodge, with birds of many species using the riverside vegetation and the water regularly attracting game.

The main lodge area provides a communal focus for meals and socializing, with a restaurant serving Ugandan and international dishes and a bar with comfortable seating and views across the Ishasha landscape. Campfire gatherings in the evenings create the natural centre of social life, with guides and staff happy to share stories and wildlife knowledge with guests.

Game drives into the Ishasha sector in search of tree-climbing lions are the primary activity, and the guides at the lodge are experienced in knowing where the prides are likely to be found among the fig and sausage trees of the sector. Other wildlife commonly seen includes elephants, buffalo, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, and a wide diversity of birds. The remoteness of the Ishasha sector means that game drives here carry a genuine quality of wilderness that is different from the more heavily trafficked northern areas of the park. For mid-range travellers who want the tree-climbing lion experience in an atmospheric and relatively private setting, Ishasha Jungle Lodge is one of the best options available.
