Mweya Safari Lodge

Luxury
★★★★★ 5 Star

Mweya Safari Lodge occupies what is arguably the finest position of any lodge in Uganda, sitting at the tip of a peninsula where the Kazinga Channel meets Lake Edward in the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The lodge’s location places it at the confluence of two massive bodies of water and directly adjacent to one of the most productive wildlife corridors in Africa. From the rooms, the restaurant, the poolside, and the walking paths around the peninsula, guests can observe hippos, elephants, buffalo, warthogs, and a phenomenal variety of birds without leaving the immediate lodge grounds. The views stretch across the water to the distant profiles of the Virunga volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and on clear evenings the snow-capped silhouettes of the Rwenzori Mountains are visible to the north.

The lodge was established decades ago and carries a history and reputation that few properties in Uganda can match. It has been the base for countless wildlife research expeditions, conservation projects, and diplomatic visits, and the quality of what it offers has been refined over many years of operation. Accommodation spans a comprehensive range: 32 standard rooms with en-suite bathrooms, fans, and park-facing balconies; 12 air-conditioned deluxe rooms with upgraded interiors and lake views; spacious suites with separate living areas and mini-bars; luxury and standard safari tents with en-suite facilities; family cottages with multiple bedrooms and shared living spaces; the Queen’s Cottage with two bedrooms and expanded balconies; and the Presidential Cottage with a living area, kitchenette, and sweeping views of the Kazinga Channel.

The restaurant serves a menu that draws on both Ugandan and international culinary traditions, with the emphasis on fresh local produce and the kind of generous, well-executed cooking that suits an active safari clientele. The swimming pool offers views across the channel. A resident wildlife guide accompanies guests on the peninsula walks that have become one of Mweya’s most distinctive offerings, providing informed commentary on the hippos, birds, and other animals encountered within minutes of the lodge entrance.

Game drives, Kazinga Channel boat cruises, chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura Gorge, and birdwatching across the park’s diverse habitats round out the activity programme. The combination of a genuinely world-class location, a comprehensive range of room types, and a decades-long tradition of quality service makes Mweya Safari Lodge the benchmark property for Queen Elizabeth National Park.
