Elephant Plains Safari Lodge

Luxury
★★★★★ 5 Star

Elephant Plains Safari Lodge sits on the western escarpment of the Albertine Rift in Queen Elizabeth National Park, with views that extend across open savannah grasslands to Lake George and the mountain ranges beyond. The name reflects one of the lodge's most distinctive qualities: the frequency with which elephant herds gather at the edge of Lake Kikorongo, visible from the lodge's terrace and poolside, particularly in the dry season when water sources concentrate wildlife. The combination of a commanding escarpment position, regular large mammal sightings from the lodge grounds, and excellent proximity to the Kasenyi Plains game viewing area makes Elephant Plains one of the more rewarding base camps for savannah wildlife watching in Queen Elizabeth.

The accommodation consists of six private cottages and two spacious family cottages, all thoughtfully spaced across 80 acres of private wilderness to ensure maximum privacy between units. Each cottage includes a comfortable bed with quality linens, a large en-suite bathroom, and a private veranda from which guests can observe the open landscape and watch for wildlife passing through the property. The interiors use natural materials and warm colour palettes inspired by the surrounding savannah, creating a visual continuity between the inside of the cottage and the world outside.

The communal areas at Elephant Plains are designed for both relaxed socializing and active wildlife watching. Alfresco dining on the terrace provides a natural vantage point across the grassland. The bar and lounge seating areas are positioned to take advantage of the westerly views that produce particularly striking sunset colours over the Albertine valley. Evening campfires provide the traditional focus for safari storytelling and star-gazing. A swimming pool set in the lodge grounds offers views over the wilderness and a welcome cooling option after hot afternoon game drives.

The Kasenyi Plains below the escarpment are among the best lion habitat in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the lodge's guiding team is experienced in locating prides in this productive area. Elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, warthogs, and an abundant diversity of savannah birds are encountered regularly on drives. Kazinga Channel boat cruises are reachable in under an hour, and the combination of open savannah and channel boat activities gives guests a full experience of the park's diverse wildlife zones. For travellers who want luxury accommodation with a genuinely wild setting and regular close-range wildlife encounters from the lodge itself, Elephant Plains provides a compelling option.
