Kyambura Gorge Lodge

Kyambura Gorge Lodge stands on the dramatic rim of the Kyambura Gorge, a deeply incised forested canyon that cuts through the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park before dropping steeply to the waters below. The gorge is home to one of Africa's most poignant wildlife stories: an isolated community of chimpanzees, the so-called "Lost Chimps of Kyambura," cut off from the main chimpanzee populations of Kibale Forest by a surrounding ocean of savannah grassland. Trekking into the gorge to find and observe these chimps is one of the most unusual and emotionally affecting wildlife experiences in East Africa, and the lodge's position directly above it makes the experience entirely different from anywhere else in Uganda.

The lodge was originally a coffee processing facility, and its transformation into an eco-lodge as part of the Kyambura Gorge Ecotourism Project is one of Uganda's most successful examples of conservation through tourism. The six bandas are individually designed in an Afro-chic style, using repurposed Ugandan artefacts, natural materials, and locally crafted décor. Private verandas offer sweeping views either across the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park or down into the green depth of the gorge itself, creating two entirely different visual moods that guests can choose between depending on their preference for the day.

A scenic swimming pool overlooks the park, a spa provides therapeutic treatments, and comfortable lounge and dining spaces with panoramic views make the communal areas as appealing as the private rooms. The Fig Tree Trail, beginning just below the lodge, leads directly down into the gorge. Guided walks through the savannah, boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel, lion monitoring with park researchers, and birdwatching in the adjacent reclaimed wetland round out the activity programme. The Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward and teems with hippos, elephants, buffalo, and hundreds of bird species, is reachable in a short drive.
