Mihingo Lodge

Luxury
★★★★★ 5 Star

Mihingo Lodge is a family-owned eco-lodge that has earned its position as one of the most consistently praised mid-to-high-range properties in western Uganda through the combination of a dramatic physical setting, exceptional wildlife viewing, and a personal warmth of management and service that large commercial properties find almost impossible to replicate. The lodge is built on and around a dramatic rocky kopje formed from Pre-Cambrian granite boulders more than 500 million years old, and the ancient geological character of these rocks, their deep orange-grey surfaces and the way they sit in the landscape, gives Mihingo a visual character that is entirely its own.

Twelve luxury tented rooms are positioned across the kopje and surrounding areas, each in a unique location that gives it a different perspective on the surrounding landscape. Some rooms are nestled in the forest, others perched on rocky outcrops with direct views over the savannah and lake below, and others positioned close to the natural waterhole where wildlife gathers daily. The rooms are spacious, beautifully furnished with quality natural materials, and equipped with en-suite bathrooms, good beds, and all the practical amenities expected at a luxury eco-lodge. Each room has a private outdoor space where the view and the wildlife can be observed from complete personal privacy.

The infinity pool at Mihingo is positioned to overlook the natural waterhole below, creating what is possibly the most productive wildlife-watching swimming pool in Uganda. From the pool, guests regularly see buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bushbuck, and zebra coming to drink throughout the day, and the resident family of klipspringer antelope that live in the rocks of the kopje are visible at close range from various points on the lodge grounds. The park's healthy leopard population means that night game drives from Mihingo are particularly rewarding, and the opportunity to see these elusive cats in the open savannah of Lake Mburo is one of the most compelling reasons to choose this lodge.

Horse-riding safaris in Lake Mburo National Park are a signature activity available from Mihingo and represent one of the most memorable ways to experience the park's wildlife. The ability to approach zebras, impalas, and other animals on horseback, which does not trigger the same flight responses as vehicles, creates wildlife encounters of a completely different quality and intimacy from a conventional game drive. Boat trips on Lake Mburo and walking safaris with armed rangers complete the activity programme for one of Uganda's most underrated safari destinations.
