Lake Mburo NP
Rwakobo Rock Lodge is built around a series of dramatic rocky outcrops just outside the boundary of Lake Mburo National Park, and these rocks, rising from the surrounding savannah and woodland in irregular formations, give the lodge a visual character and a physical drama that is quite distinct from the comparatively flat accommodation sites of many competing properties in the area. The journey to the lodge through the scenic Nshara Ranch, where the famous long-horned Ankole cattle graze alongside wild zebra in the same open landscape, provides an introduction to the human and natural ecology of this part of Uganda that begins the safari experience well before arrival.
The accommodation options at Rwakobo Rock Lodge cover several formats within the mid-range category. Private thatched cottages are built among the rocks themselves, using solar lighting, en-suite bathrooms, flush toilets, and solar-heated showers, with stunning sunset views over the savannah from each unit's private veranda. Hornbill House Rooms provide beautiful self-contained rooms with private verandas for travellers who want the comfort of a conventional room format. En-suite safari tents offer a more authentic and close-to-nature experience while maintaining the practical conveniences that make a safari stay comfortable.
The lodge's main communal area includes a restaurant and bar positioned to overlook the natural waterhole just below the dining space. Throughout the day, zebras, impalas, bushbucks, warthogs, and other savannah wildlife visit the waterhole with predictable regularity, making every meal at Rwakobo a genuine wildlife experience in itself. As evening falls, the atmosphere around the waterhole becomes particularly magical, with the sounds of the bush carrying clearly in the cooling air and the stars beginning to appear above the rocky outcrops.
Game drives, boat trips on Lake Mburo, walking safaris, horse-riding expeditions, and night game drives are all available from the lodge. The combination of the dramatic rocky landscape, the reliable wildlife waterhole viewing, and the Ankole cattle scenery of the approach journey makes Rwakobo one of the more characterful mid-range options in the Lake Mburo area.
